At the end of 1985, untamable Mason Capwell finally seems to let his heart throbing for a woman, Sister Mary DuVall. It is time for the writers to create the one who will come to interpose in this beautiful love story , Dr. Mark McCormick, third side of an endearing and tragic new love triangle.

And when, by chance, arrives in this end of year Dr. Mark McCormick, an old friend of the nun, no one cannot imagine the dark heart who lives in him. It is in the private clinic where she works as a nurse that Mary finds Mark, her friend of youth. In love with her since always, Mark is well decided to conquer her heart. Especially that Mark, as a faithful friend, is there to support the DuVall family, then shaken by the affair of the rape of the young Christy. Having noticed the tender links which started to be tied between Mary and Mason, Mark does not hesitate to discredit Mason, seeking to open the eyes to her on his unstable and insensitive personality. Because Mary, tormented by her feelings, does not know what to do : in contact with the elder of the Capwell children, she felt a new fire which was waking up in her, a fire which fills her of joy, better than her Christian faith had done it until there.

And benefitting from a new rupture with Mason (he is then the lawyer of his young brother in the affair of the rape), Mark invites Mary in a cabin in the snow-covered mountains of Los Padres to ask her in marriage. But taken as a target by mad Kirk Cranston (who tries to be avenged of Eden and Cruz also present there), the cabin explodes in the middle of the night. Seriously wounded, Mark is led to the hospital, in a critical state. Believing himself, as the doctors say to him, on the point of death, he asks then Mary, deeply sad, to marry him. In addition to the health of her friend, she then has just definitively broke with Mason, because he was also having an affair with Gina DeMott, his mother-in-law. Certain that it is the ultimate vow of a dying man, Mary complies with his request. And in the most total precipitation of a hospital room, although deeply in love with Mason, Mary becomes the wife of Mark McCormick. But what seemed to be the last will of a dying man turns to be a manipulation of Mark when, once the ceremony completed, he miraculously recovers from his injuries.

Become impotent after the accident, Mark lives from now on in the humiliation and the frustration to be able to satisfy the woman he succeeded in marrying. Mary, on her side, is always in love with Mason and feels guilty to have married Mark for bad reasons. She feels taken in an infernal trap, from which control escapes to her little by little. Understanding that Mary escapes from him every day more to Mason, Mark makes his young wife living a real hell, as much physically as morally. Having had the proof that the relation between Mason and Gina was only a machination from her part, Mary ends up succumbing to the advances of her lover, what pushes Mark in an insane anger. This one, mad of rage, beats her up and rapes her. Mark lost everything at this moment : if Mary already did not love him any more, she consequently does not even feel pity for him. She decides to ask the divorce, following the advice of her lover, when she discovers that she is waiting a child of Mason. And even if she hides to Mason the deep nature of Mark, the lawyer is not dupe of his rival's black soul.

Persuaded that Mary is pregnant of him, Mark is well decided to prevent the object of his love from leaving him. During his previous researches, Mason had discovered that Janice Harrison, the model he recently dated, was formerly married to Mark. This one had explained to him the reasons of their separation and of her change of identity (she was then called Wendy McCormick) : witness of a medical error of Mark which cost the life to a patient, Janice had felt threatened and, after the violences he inflicted to her, she had preferred to leave him and run far from him. This testimony against Mark turns to be the weapon able to ruin and his marriage and his reputation. And the violent fights which do not cease continue even in court, where Mark is defended by Julia Wainwright, whose unavowed purpose is to make her customer imprisoned.

Well decided to be hear by Mary once again and to prove his love to her, Mark joins her an evening of storm on the roof of the Capwell hotel where she took refuge. He has not time to plead his cause that a squall of wind carries away the letter "C" of the ensign of the hotel, which falls on Mary and immediately kills her. Face to a desperate and lost Mason, Mark is for a while sequestered and bound by Mason on the roof of the hotel. He however succeeds in reasoning him and to obtain his release and for exchange, Mark is obliged to sign a paper in which he admits having sexually abused of Mary.

If Mason, destroyed by the brutal death of Mary, finds refuge in alcohol, the things seem to be arranged for Mark. Relieved to escape to the justice of men thanks to the death of his wife, he decides to be withdrawn in the convent where she officiated, in order to find his marks again and to make the mourning of his wife. But, in the convent directed by Mother Isabel, another justice awaits Dr. Mark McCormick since he will find death in quite obscure conditions.

After years of silence, we have to wait the year 1988, to hear again about Dr. Mark McCormick. Whereas Cruz, helped by the police of Santa Barbara, seeks after the body of late Hal Clark, these are the bones of Mark which are found in the Capwell boathouse. An investigation for murder is immediately opened by the district attorney Keith Timmons. And very quickly, all the suspicions go on Mason Capwell. Because just after the death of Mary, Mason would have spent nearly two days to drink. The investigation initially led by Mason, then by Julia, reveals very quickly Mary's former convent for place of the crime. The investigation will end up demonstrating that Mark was killed by Sister Agatha. The day of the murder, she would have surprised Mark trying to rape another nun, deaf and dumb Sister Sarah. Then Sister Agatha, with the help of Father Michael Donnelly, threw the corpse to the sea, where it derived to the Capwell boathouse. A late end for a character who, from the eyes of the lovers of Mary's, well deserved such a punishment.

Mark McCormick will have crossed only during one year the world of Santa Barbara. Curiously, he does not take part of the list of the deeply bad beings who crossed the show (Kirk Cranston, Elena Nikolas...), whereas he is directly and indirectly responsible for the end of one of the most beautiful love stories of the show. In the same way, Mark, across the tomb, returned to be avenged of his worst enemy, Mason Capwell. And he was within an inch of eliminating a second time the one for who Mason's heart beats, the one who became for many people the substitute of Mary : the pretty lawyer Julia Wainwright...

The weddings of Santa Barbara
Mary DuVall and Mark McCormick

The first wedding of this year 1986 concerns one of the most popular characters of the show : the sweet Mary DuVall. This nun came in Santa Barbara the previous season to support her young sister, Christy. As of her arrival, the tortuous Mason Capwell finds in contact of the nun some serenity. And very quickly, while Mary takes care on the coma of C.C. Capwell, the two heroes are attracted the one to the other. But at that time, Mary remains before everything a nun, a young woman linked to God.

During this year, sister Mary DuVall leaves the orders, which largely facilitates the things between her and Mason. And no more obstacle seems to be opposed to their affair. So much more so as Mason succeeded, once for all, to push back the advances of his mother-in-law, Gina Capwell. Unfortunately for them, a new character will stand up against their love : Doctor Mark McCormick, Mary's friend of youth. As of his come-back, Mark will try to move away Mary from Mason because, for many years, he is secretly in love with the young woman. And now that she is separated from God, he has the firm intention to try his chance and to take the vacant place left in her heart.

Whereas Mary feels finally ready to give body and heart to a man, the events will irremediably move her away from Mason, who now makes her heart vibrate. Mark is at the hospital in a critical state, since his days, according to doctors', are counted. He was mortally wounded at the time of an explosion orchestrated by Kirk Cranston in order to kill Eden and Cruz. Feeling condemned, from his hospital bed, he asks, he even beseeches, Mary to marry him, so he can leave this Earth, happy and filled. To the general surprise, Mary accepts his proposal : how could she have refused this ultimate testimony of friendship to her best friend ? The ceremony is celebrated by a priest, at the Santa Barbara hospital, with an extreme speed, justified by Mark's state of health. This wedding, of course, will be followed neither a reception, nor a honeymoon.

Contrary to all the medical opinions, Mark survives his wounds. Mary, from now on unhappy of this situation which confines her, refuses to give herself to Mark. She does not want to be given to him, because she does not love him. She feels betrayed by him. If she accepted his wedding proposal it is by pity. Because her heart is taken : it belongs to Mason Capwell. But by respect towards the marriage sacrament, even if it is with a man she does not love, Mary refuses to make love with Mason. She prefers to wait to have found her freedom again, respecting the exact commands of God. As a proof of love, one fina day Mason kidnaps Mary, leads her in a Renaissance style tent, and offers to her the most romantic day of her life. This day, we discover another facet of Mason, a facet that only Mary could reach. Alone, in the middle of the mountains, Mason and Mary live their love fully. During this prank, they live a day filled of love. Only one day for a whole life. Because, as careless as people who love each other, they hoped that this day would be the first of the life which was going to get offered to them...

Mad of rage towards this relationship triangle, not understanding that his wife can thus refuse to give herself to her husband, Mark, in an access of anger, rapes Mary. Misfortune seems to fall with eagerness on poor Mary. Fortunately for her, in spite of her marriage with Mark, Mason remains at her sides, and offers to her a solid shoulder on which she finds supports and comfort.

But the worst for them, and more particularly for Mason, will not be long in coming up, definitively breaking all the chances for their love. And what nobody thought realizable happens on our screens : Mary finds death... She is mortally wounded by the fall of the "C" of the luminous ensign of the Capwell hotel. The death of Mary upsets Mason deeply. If Mary's love had guided him slowly towards the light, her death plunges him again in darkness and makes re-appear, from the tomb, his cynicism, his rancour, his hatred... Lost of pain, he leaves Santa Barbara, preferring to flee rather than to deal with the absence of his beloved...

The public also cries and terribly regrets the character of Mary DuVall, so much her character was attaching and brought a little humanity in the world of Santa Barbara. As for Mason, after his escape, he will come back to Santa Barbara months later, accompanied by a young evangelist : Lily Light who made it possible to his terrible wound to heal. Actually, he just deferred his anger and his frustration to have lost the one he loves on his father. It will be necessary for him to wait some long months before he can start a such intense relation with another woman, Julia Wainwright.

Portrait

For her softness and her kindness, Mary DuVall is one of the characters of Santa Barbara who will have marked the fans of the show forever. Mary does her appearance in 1985, working as voluntary sister in a private clinic of Santa Barbara. She is notably C.C. Capwell's appointd nurse during his coma. One day, she meets Mason Capwell, the tormented elder of the rich family. At her contact, Mason sees his personality transformed : he becomes patient, accessible, finally opened and trustful. Very quickly they acknowledge their love for each other. But one day, Gina DeMott, jealous, organises a trap against Mary : she makes her come in her room for Mason's part, and there, dressed with nothing but a towel, she kisses Mason who has no time to push her back. Feeling scouted, Mary decides to break, despite Mason explains her it was just a plan from Gina to make them separate.

It is at this moment that Dr. Mark McCormick, Mary's old friend from college, joins her in town. But they are victims of an attack organized by Kirk Cranston, directed against Eden and Cruz. Mary comes out uninjured, but Mark, who was also there becomes paralysed. On his hospaital bed, he asks Mary in marriage. Thinking that Mark is going to die, she accepts, in spite of her always strong love for Mason. The union is celebrated in the hospital room just after. But Mark succeeds to survive to his injuries and Mary then regrets to have married him for wrong reasons. But she can't refrain from containing her real feelings to the two men. By revenge, Mark rapes Mary.

Sometimes later, Mary learns that she's pregnant of Mason, with who she lives now, and starts a procedure to divorce. But Mason guesses who is at the origin of the rape when he meets Janice Harrison, Mark’s first wife, who acknowledges him that she had ever been beaten by him. Mary cannot prevent Mason from visiting Mark, to make him acknowledge his act. But Mark says nothing and refuses the divorce, saying that Mary's baby is his. Proceedings are then instituted, Mary being defended by Mason and Mark by Julia Wainwright (who acts in fact against her customer, wanting to make him imprisonned). But an evening they dispute concerning the divorce on the roof of the Capwell hotel, Mary and Mark are surprised by a storm. Suddenly, the immense letter "C" of the ensign gets detached and falls on Mary, then always pregnant, who dies immediately. Mason, disabled, will never be really able to recover from her death and will consequently darken in alcoholism.

Mary however makes a reappearance in 1989. Whereas Mason falls into coma after a shot of which he was the target, he arrives in paradise where he is received by Mary herself. She reveals to be his guardian angel and to be at his sides at each time since her death and forever. She speaks to him about their reciprocal love which never succeeded to end despite all these years and advises him to marry Julia who loves him and who will be able to make him happy. Comforted to know her happy and so close to him, Mason turns over to our world and finally marries Julia, but without forgetting the first woman he ever loved. Which other more beautiful proof of love could bring Santa Barbara to us than this union which will never cease ?...

"college")...
