Comic Review: Charmed #6: Morality Bites Back

Issue: Charmed #6: Morality Bites Back
Release Date: February 2011
Author: Paul Ruditis
Artist: Tess Fowler
Cover A: David Seidman
Colors: John Hunt and Jeff Balke
Letters: Jim Campbell
Editors: Ralph Tedesco and Paul Ruditis
Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment

Fans of Charmed may recognize a familiar face in this issue, as Cal Greene of “Mortality Bites” fame has returned to the storyline. This choice of plotline has a definite exclusionary factor for new readers, but a nice celebration for those of us who have been long-time viewers. It appears we have closed the chapter on the last arc and are starting new ones.

Cal’s reappearance is not the blast from the past that Phoebe was looking for, but since Cal has become Mika’s new guy, she’s putting on a brave face and pretending like it doesn’t phase her. Well, she’s doing that in public. In private, with her sisters, she’s asserting the notion that Cal is an evil, evil man who must be stopped. And maybe Phoebe wants to be stopped, too, since she’s supposed to kill him in less than a year with a yet-to-be discovered power. People may change, but memories last forever… even if they’re memories from an alternate future.

So, in order to get the scoop and figure out if this Cal has the same motivation as alternate-Cal, Phoebe uses her dinner date to chat him up. Too bad all that small talk was useless. Or maybe it was a sign that the dreaded future won’t take place. Even Coop’s attempts to turn the night around by taking her to Cupid’s Temple are for naught, since Phoebe won’t stop thinking about Cal. I particularly loved that Coop brought up Cole as an example of dark sides and love. So instead of being suspicious, Phoebe needs to trust her instincts and it will all work out in the end.

And her instincts tell her to keep digging until she uncovers something. Turns out that a woman had come forward a year earlier with claims that Cal had beaten her. Before an official report could be filed, Cal made it all go away. The victim was just the tip of the iceberg, though. The more information that is discovered, the worse it looks for Cal. He’s threatened everyone who knew the truth, even Elise and the paper, and now Mika might be in danger because of that silence. But she gets off easy, since she and Cal break up without any violence incited against her aside from a few angry words. Elise was not so lucky, getting attacked at the office by Cal. However, with some mortal freezing and some glamours, the Charmed Ones managed to show the attack in living color to the public at large. Cal is put away, Phoebe saved from her vengeful actions, and the world is temporarily safe from the darkness that humans can express.

While I enjoyed the callback to the earlier canon of the show, this issue’s plot was a definite detour from the larger mystical topics that normally center around the Halliwells. I’m left to wonder whether we’ll ever pick up the lingering threads from last issue or if we’ll embark on another large battle with new issues. For this month, we rest in the safety of history and await what else the Charmed Ones must face.

Comic Review: Charmed #7: The Heir Up There

This month’s issue of the comic lets us focus on Leo! The Whitelighter has always been one of my favorite characters, so I was happily looking forward to seeing where this one would go. To be more exact, the story centers on Melinda, but her father is sent to find out the reason she can float furniture. Yes, the baby has Whitelighter powers.

I liked seeing the changes amongst the Elders. Kyle Brody’s gotten a promotion, which was unexpected. And apparently the Elders had a larger plan for Leo and his daughter. Despite it being impossible that the traits would be passed from father to child, Melinda has indeed inherited his Whitelighter powers. The question then is why? What do the Elders want with her? That’s what Leo is determined to find out, but the truth is problematic. The Elders altered the twice-blessed prophecy, so Wyatt, Chris, and Melinda are all twice-blessed.

Since the Elders over-stepped their boundaries on this, they’ve been replaced. Is the new council going to be any better than the previous one? Or will they continue to create havoc in the lives of the Charmed Ones? If I were betting, I would put my money on the latter. But Kyle’s not done with the revelations yet because not only has he been chosen to be the Charmed Ones’ new Whitelighter, but Kyle can also give Leo back his wings so that he can become the Guardian of his family. Isn’t this the best solution for Leo? Well, the offer wasn’t made out of the goodness of the Elders’ hearts. No, it was done to protect them from renowned Darklighter Rennek, who has not only returned, but teamed up with Neena. But Leo doesn’t want to take the deal. He’ll help fight the good fight, but he’s not going to watch his family grow old while he does not. It’s not what he wants and it’s not what he’d choose.

One of my large problems with this issue was the change in artists. Abreu and Parvanov worked together previously on the art for Issue #4. I loved the artwork for that one, so I’m absolutely confused why this issue lost the slickness and left us with a hazy representation of the characters. In the beginning, the lines weren’t crisp, the colors were muted, and it separated the reader from the story. As we make our way through the comic, the characters’ appearances become almost unrecognizable in certain situations. At one point, Leo was substituted for Don Johnson. It wasn’t pretty. Also, I was so focused on how huge Melinda’s head was drawn that I couldn’t concentrate on the scenes she was in.

So, on one hand, I was happy to see Neena back and we’re going back to the larger storyline that we started in the first five issues. On the other hand, the artwork definitely hindered the storytelling and if Neena hadn’t been named I wouldn’t have recognized her at all. I’m hoping that as we continue forward with this arc that the renderings improve. Until next time, I’m left to ponder what a Rennek and Neena partnership might mean. It’s certainly nothing good.

Comic Review: Charmed #8: Oh, Henry

Issue: Charmed #8: Oh, Henry
Release Date: March 2011
Author: Paul Ruditis
Artist: Carlos Granda

Colors: John Hunt

The fight with Rennek is no longer a future event as we start the issue being thrown straight into the action! I always enjoy seeing the fight between good and evil playing out on my screen, or in this case on the page. I’ve commented before how the storyline of the arc seemed to be going very slowly in the first few issues, but now it’s been amped up to a level that I’m accustomed to for the show.

First, a note about some of the things that didn’t work for me. I wasn’t a fan of the artwork, but I can’t figure out if it’s because of the art itself or the coloring of it. I have a noted preference for softer tones and lines, neither of which are evident in this issue when it comes to the Charmed Ones. The demon side of the storyline, however, has plenty of softer tones. Why the opposite mood-setting? It doesn’t completely take me away from the storyline, but it does leave me a little sad at the potential of what might have been. As an aside, in terms of background design, I find the really huge picture of the twins above their playpen to be disturbing. The kids are right there; you don’t need a bigger-than-life-size picture, just look down. But the storyline is what’s most important, so let’s focus on that.

Rennek is taking down Whitelighters and the Charmed Ones are yet again too late to save the victims. One day they won’t be a step behind, but today is not that day. Sadly, one of the victims was a homeless pregnant woman who passed away as a result of the battle. However, her baby was still alive, so Paige did the only thing she could do… she orbed the baby right out of the womb. Somehow I’m reminded of Angel, but that’s a different story. Paige claims she’ll simply ask her old boss as Social Services what to do with the orphan and all will be well. You knew it wasn’t going to be that simple. Paige is soft-hearted, and she and Henry are foster parents, so what better solution than to take the baby home with them?

Paige is all about welcoming the boy into their lives. And if suitable parents can’t be found for him, then she’s completely willing to adopt a miniature Henry into their lives. Adult Henry has a more sensible head on his shoulders, with reminders of financial responsibilities and, oh yes, the fact that a Darklighter is out there trying to kill Whitelighters. But Paige deals with the constant threat of death by trying to focus on life. And I can understand the rationale, though I see Henry’s point quite clearly. In the end, it will be what it will be, so they better just enjoy the ride.

I find it endearing that Henry is finally voicing his doubts about this whole life. Yes, he loves Paige and the twins, but he’s also honest in that he feels like he’s the powerless one in this equation. Having to deal with magic on a daily basis is tiring and scary. Paige is in constant danger, the twins have that dangerous life to look forward to, and Henry can’t really protect his family from any of it. To bring an innocent, mortal child into the middle of that is not something Henry would wish upon the little boy. But now is not the time for family drama, as there is real drama going on outside. Paige must join her sisters and fight yet again, leaving Henry behind to deal as he always has.

Rennek and Neena are meanwhile down below, planning. The lack of consistency on their character sketches always takes me some time to get used to, from issue to issue, but I push on. Rennek is rightly suspicious of trusting Neena, namely because she killed her last partner and he doesn’t want to suffer the same fate. He trusts her as long as he doesn’t turn his back on her, I’m guessing. And now that the requirements for the plan have escalated from needing Whitelighter powers to needing demon powers, the fight may get more dangerous.

Later, Neena and her demon army are going a little bit crazy on the Golden Gate Bridge and the Elders are powerless to stop her. The Charmed Ones don’t have much hope of faring any better, but at least they’re willing to try. Too bad for Kyle that they’re once again too late to make a difference, at least for him. And then Piper goes missing, which is terrifying to think about. What’s even more terrifying is that Leo would rather come back later and try to find her than stay in the midst of Neena. Who is she and why does Leo fear her so much? Her identity reveal is what we’re left to ponder as we leave this issue. The thought of how much power Neena must have harnessed makes us wonder how bloody the resulting fight to take her down will be.
