He let out a cry as he collapsed on the hard floor. A sudden wave of tiredness washed over him replacing the pain and he wished he could stay the way he was at that moment: calm and peaceful…

"Chris!" He heard his mother's cry. He opened his eyes slowly, not being able to move. When he realized what had happened he tried to stand up but succeeded only a minute later.

Once he was up his eyes met the familiar living room, the floor covered with decorations and familiar as well ashes of what used to be demons. He felt relieved, a small smile forming on his face: "This just had to happen on my Birthday," he muttered.

"Mom!" He called, his eyes wandering to find his mother.

His smile faded as he found his mother's body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He rushed to the woman and bent over her, tears in his eyes: "Mom! Mom, wake up, please!" Nothing.

"Mom, no!" He kept crying and squeezing her hand, "Don't die, please don't die! Dad, Wyatt! Please!"

"Chris…" He heard her say his name quietly. "Chris," she said again.

"Mom, it's gonna be okay, I'll get help," he whispered as he prepared to orb. But the blue-white lights he'd been used to never surrounded his body. He opened his eyes and looked around the living room baffled. He tried again. Nothing.

"Mom, don't die! I can't orb, I think something's blocking me but just hold on a bit longer, Dad or Wyatt will come soon," he said sobbing. "Dad! Please Dad, Mom needs you! I need you!" He yelled, "Wyatt, please! Anybody!"

"Chris…I'm so sorry," He looked down at his mother's face and shut eyes and muttered: "Don't leave me…"

"I love you," she said with a faint smile that soon faded off her face as her head fell to the boy's side and her hand that he'd been holding suddenly felt colder.

"NO!"

His eyes shut open as he jumped on his bed, screaming: "NO!"

He sucked in air hungrily before falling on his back. He was sweating, but he was used to it.

"Christopher," the door to the boy's room oped wide and his Grandfather walked in. "What happened?" He asked as he reached the bed and sat down on it looking worriedly at his grandson.

"Nothing, just a nightmare," replied Chris and faked a smile.

"Again?" Victor sounded worried.

"Don't worry, Grandpa, it's no big deal," the boy said. "Really."

"If it wasn't a big deal than you wouldn't be having nightmares for the past month and a half."

"I'm just..." he started but then stopped. Words wouldn't leave his mouth.

"What?"

"I... I miss her so much, Grandpa." Chris said sobbing.

Victor pulled him into a hug and whispered: "I know it may seem like your life is going to hell but trust me, buddy, everything will turn out alright. It's only been two months, you just need time."

Chris kept sobbing, his face buried in his Grandfather's chest: "What about Wy, Grandpa? You've seen the way he's been acting, I'm not sure he will be alright."

"He will, Chris, you both will," Victor said, "He's dealing in his own way."

"He does everything in his own way," the boy smirked and Victor let a smile cross his face. It was true, his oldest Grandson did everything the way he felt right. Nobody could convince him and changed his mind, ever. Except for his little brother. But even that didn't seem to work lately.

Chris pulled out as he felt his brother orb in. His eyes met Victor's: "I want to talk to Wyatt, Grandpa."

"Sure, buddy," he kissed Chris' forehead and got on his feet to leave the room. "Just remember that you can also talk to me if you need to, okay?"

"Sure, Grandpa, thanks," Chris smiled and watched the man leave.

He waited a few minutes trying to channel his brother's mood. Wyatt hasn't really been up to talking ever since their mother had died but surely he would comfort his little brother because he knew that it was harder for him. They were always close, knowing each other better than anybody. Nobody could ever come between the two brothers and Chris was determined to keep it that way. What scared him was that he was feeling as if he was losing his brother, his best friend.

Chris got off his bed and went to his brother's room.

The elder Halliwell brother orbed in his room late that night. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a black t-shirt which was typical of him. Wyatt sighed heavily as he sensed his brother's sadness and grief but chose to stay out of that. He'd had enough that day, he needed rest. He kicked off his sneakers and landed on his bed, immediately closing his eyes.

What he didn't expect was for his little brother to show up a few minutes after.

"Wy?" Chris called out quietly. "Are you asleep?"

"No, Chris. Come in," said Wyatt in a tired voice. Rubbing his eyes as he sat on his bed.

"I just wanted to talk to you," his brother approached him. "You seem... I don't know... distant, lately."

"So what?" He replied coldly making Chris shudder. What on earth had happened to his older brother?

"Can I help? We haven't talked much lately, I thought..."

"Whatever you thought was wrong, Christopher." Wyatt said. "I'm fine. Go back to sleep."

"Okay." Chris nodded and turned choosing to leave, "Sorry."

Wyatt looked at his brother and suddenly felt horrible: "Chris, wait!", he said getting on his feet.

He walked to Chris and put his hand on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry, little brother," he smiled, "I'm just tired, didn't mean to snap at you."

"It's okay." Chris returned a smile. "I just felt like talking, is all."

"Alright then, let's talk," Wyatt nodded. His little brother needed it, he needed him. "How are you holding up?"

"Uh... Not so good, Wy. I've been having nightmares. And I'm scared."

"Why? What are you scared of?" Wyatt asked puzzled.

"I don't know," he shrugged. "Something just feels wrong."

Wyatt looked in his brother's eyes and found himself looking at a completely different person. He wasn't like that two months ago. Something was missing in his eyes and Wyatt knew exactly what. That living flame he'd had. It wasn't there, not anymore.

"Why haven't you told me about the nightmares, I thought you stopped having them?"

"Because you're never here anymore, Wy!" Chris exclaimed suddenly. "Which leads me to what I actually wanted to talk about!"

Wyatt rolled his eyes and turned away from his brother. He walked to the window of his room and stared down at an empty street saying: "You don't understand, Chris..."

"What don't I understand? That you spend days and nights in the underworld?" Chris asked. "Well you damn right I don't understand!" he calmed down after a bit and added, "Wy, if it's about revenge..."

"It's not about revenge!" Wyatt snapped and looked back at his brother. "It is partly, but not fully."

"Then what is it about?"

"I can't tell you, not yet."

Chris rolled his eyes and snapped back: "Well you'd better hurry up because I'm getting ugly ideas."

"Chris, listen to yourself! You sound like a child, that's why I can't tell you now. You're not ready, you won't understand!" Wyatt yelled piercing his brother with his light blue eyes that were once full of life and happiness. Now they were deep holes that held nothing.

"Guess what, Wy! I am a child!" Chris yelled back. He closed his eyes trying to hold back tears. "I'm fourteen, Wy. I don't want to grow up, not yet. And I don't want you to grow up because I don't like what you're becoming."

"What do you think I'm becoming?"

"I don't know," the younger Halliwell whispered. "All I know is that I want my brother. The one that swore to protect me and be there for me at our mother's funeral."

"I am protecting you, Chris," Wyatt muttered. "But you can't see that, unfortunately."

"What are you doing, Wyatt? What are you doing down there?" Chris asked, tears in his eyes. "Are you vanquishing demons?"

"Sometimes."

"What do you mean sometimes?"

Wyatt didn't answer. He looked away instead. Chris stared at him for what seemed to be forever and then turned to leave, realizing that his brother was done. He closed the door behind him and went to his room, sobbing silently. He felt pathetic, crying like that. But he couldn't help it. He was just a child after all, though not for long. That much he realized, while talking to his brother. What now?

two years later

Christopher Halliwell sat motionlessly on the grass. He looked down at his Grandfather's grave and sighed heavily, not being able to look away. He knew that the day would come, that Victor would be gone but he never expected it to happen so suddenly. He just walked on his Grandfather lying on the floor and his mind flashed to his fourteenth birthday when his mother was killed. He called Leo. Nothing. He called Wyatt. Nothing. He orbed Victor to the Hospital and spent more than two hours there until the doctor came out and told him that it was over. It was over in so many ways.

He felt a warm hand on his shoulder and he didn't need to look up to know who it was.

"Let's go home, little brother."

"Depends on what you call home, Wyatt." Came a quite reply.

Christopher got on his feet and walked passed the older Halliwell. Wyatt dropped one last look at his Grandfather's grave, exactly knowing that it was the last, and walked behind his brother.

"Christopher, wait." Wyatt called for his brother, who stopped immediately and turned to face him. There they were again, burying the last member of the family. Now they only had each other, but had they really? Chris' eyes flashed to the graves next to his Grandfather's: his mother, his aunts, uncles, cousins... all of them. Dead.

"Looks like we're the last ones standing," Chris said.

"It will always be this way, little brother," Wyatt replied. "Remember? I'm here for you, always."

"Even after you take over as the fucking Source of all evil?" Chris asked and his face turned into stone. He looked at his brother with empty green eyes and Wyatt knew that it was partly his fault that they were empty.

"Wha... How do you...?"

"I saw you, Wy. I followed you down there."

"You followed me?" Wyatt exploded. "What the fuck were you thinking, Chris? Who gave you the right?"

"Nobody gave me the right, I just wanted to know what kind of a mess my brother had gotten himself into!" Chris yelled. "Is that what you've been doing all along? Ever since Mom died?"

"Yes." He simple said.

"Why? What for?"

"So that nobody would ever hurt us again."

"Well you got that wrong, Wy, 'cause for the past two years we lost our whole family. And you weren't there to help!"

Wyatt suddenly smiled and said: "Why would I help if I planned it?"

"What?" Chris asked, starting to lose the ground under his feet. Impossible!

"You heard me." The Twice-Blessed smirked. He saw his brother's face twitch in pain and confusion. He walked closer and wrapped his arms around his little brother: "We don't need them, Chris. It's just you and me, it's the way it's supposed to be."

Chris pulled away rapidly and started backwards. "You sick son of a bitch!" He cried. "How could you do that? They were family!"

"No, Chris, we're family. They were nobody!"

"Wyatt, those were our aunts, our cousins! They were just kids!"Chris suddenly felt like he was going to throw up. He looked around to find nobody and chose that moment to orb away, ignoring his brother's cries.

Christopher stood in the middle of his room, eyes locked on the ceiling. Of course, he had called him before, but now was important. And now it had nothing to do with Chris, but everything to do with Wyatt. He pulled his thoughts together and sighed: "Dad!"He cried. "Dad, it's important, please!" He added after a few moments, "Wyatt's in danger, please, he needs you!"

A bright light appeared next to the boy forming into a shape of his father. He looked at the man in confusion as if he hadn't expected for him to show up.

"What happened? Where's Wyatt?" Leo asked worriedly and walked passed Chris, observing the room.

"I don't know," the boy said quietly.

"But you said he was in danger."

"We're all in danger, Dad," Chris murmured, "And before I tell you more, I want you to answer one question." Leo looked at his son annoyed and put his arms over his chest.

"Would it have killed to show up at least once?" The younger Halliwell asked with a broken voice, eyes locked to his father's.

"Chris, I..." Leo looked away. "I couldn't."

"Why? I'm... We're your sons, Dad. We needed you!"

Chris walked to his father and put his hands on Leo's shoulders, making the man look at his son. Tears were forming again. But not in Leo's eyes.

"You missed Phoebe's funeral. Then Paige's. Henry's, Coop's, the girls'. Do you not care at all?"

"I do care, Christopher, but I couldn't come. They wouldn't let me." Leo tried to excuse himself, shoving Chris' hands off of his shoulders.

"They, they, they! You keep saying it's their fault, but you're one of them! If you'd wanted you would have found a minute to come down here." Chris looked more than hurt. He looked disappointed and crushed.

"What's wrong with Wyatt?" Leo asked after a while, making his younger son close his eyes. A couple of tears ran down his cheeks, but his father preferred not to notice.

"He's … changed."

Leo suddenly turned serious and demanded: "What do you mean? What happened?"

"He's turned," Chris said and Leo lifted his eyebrows. "As in turned. From good... to evil."

"What?" Leo laughed out. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about your son being the Source."

"Listen to yourself, how can you say something like that about your own brother?" Leo said in disgust.

"Dad, it's true! Wy spends most of his time down in the underworld. And he's not just vanquishing demons, he gets them on his side. Dad, please,I need you to believe me, I saw it and Wyatt told me himself!" Leo shook his head in disbelief and seized to his son's collar pulling him closer: "If you think that what you're saying is anything close to the truth, than you're crazy! Wyatt would never turn away from his family, from his destiny."

"But our family is gone and it's Wyatt who took care of it!" The boy cried as he released himself from his father's grip. "Wyatt killed them all!"

"I knew this was a mistake," Leo suddenly said, turning away from Chris.

"What was a mistake?" His son asked.

Leo turned back to face Christopher and the boy flinched when he saw how much hate and dislike his father's eyes held.

"You are, Christopher. You were never supposed to be born, I knew we shouldn't have..." Leo trailed off as Chris shuddered and stumbled backwards. "From the moment you were born... your mother almost died, giving birth. You always needed protection, you were so weak. Every time there was an attack I had to come down here and heal you and then get in trouble with the other elders for leaving." Leo said some more things but Chris didn't hear them. His legs suddenly got weak and he fell back on his bed, fighting hard to keep his body in a sitting position. He kept staring at his father's eyes not being able to believe what he was hearing.

"It was your fault your mother had died. It was on your damn Birthday, those demons came for you! You are the reason this family fell apart and don't you dare blame Wyatt for anything!"

"Dad, you don't mean that..." Chris whispered, tears running down his cheeks.

His father gave out a small laugh and said: "Look at you, you're so pathetic." Lights surrounded Leo's body as he disappeared, leaving his son's pleads hanging in the air.

"Dad, please..."

It was the last time Christopher saw his father. He sat silently on his bed and kept crying.

He would soon make a decision.

five years later

Christopher Halliwell was thinking.

It's been five years since he had made the decision that changed his life forever. He often thought about the hesitation that stroke him the moment he decided to leave his home. Would it have all turned out okay if he had stayed? Maybe he could have avoided all the sacrifices, the deaths of people that rose against his brother. Maybe if he had remained by his brother's side, the elder Hallwell wouldn't have turned out to be such a monster. He would have held him back a little... He was so tired of thinking about all the 'what if's'.

Chris stood up from his chair and started to pace back and forth in his small room. He had come up with yet another plan and he needed to work on every little detail. As far as he could see, the plan was perfect. Now he had to concentrate on the key – the Book. Which meant he would have to get inside the manor, unnoticed. And that was only the first of the thousands of obstacles that had been waiting for him.

"Chris." He heard a familiar voice and turned to see its owner walk in. "Did you call for me?"

"Yes," he smiled. Seeing her face always made his day lighter somehow, "I need to talk to you about the plan."

"Haven't we already talked about that?" Light chocolate eyes looked into his with concern and worry, "It's too risky. You just can't take that chance."

"I have to, Bianca. We have no other choice, it's the only way."

Bianca lifted her hands and touched his cheek: "Think about the Resistance, Chris." She said. "Your Resistance. You're the one who made those people believe in themselves, you convinced them that it will all turn out okay one day."

Chris closed his eyes and turned away from his fiancee. However, she went on: "You can't leave, Chris. They need you, they need their leader."

"I know that," he whispered, "But if I can change this, none of them will have to suffer through this hell."

"What if you can't?" She asked.

"Well I have to try, at least." He said and went on as the Phoenix wanted to say something, "Like you said before, I am the only one who can save us. I am the one who has to do this."

Bianca looked down, defeated, as she realized that nothing could change his mind. "Alright, what do we have to do?"

It was time, he had to. He realized that. But there she was, fighting gracefully as she always did. She handled that demon quickly, he knew she could take care of herself. A few seconds had passed as the demons disappeared in flames, stabbed by the Phoenix.

A portal behind him started to glow lighter and he knew he had to go now. "Bianca!"

"Go!"

"I..." He trailed off. He looked pale suddenly.

"What? What is it?" She asked, still holding her athame.

"He's coming." Chris whispered. "You have to get out of here!"

"So do you, Chris! Quickly before he finds you!"

He nodded as he watched the Phoenix get ready to shimmer away and said: "Bi," she looked at him. "I love you."

She smiled and said before shimmering: "I love you too, Christopher Halliwell." And she was gone. He had to go too. He turned to the portal and got ready to step in.

"I did not think it would come to this, Christopher."

The younger Halliwell stopped. He faced his brother.

"Wyatt."

"Oh, Chris," Wyatt smirked. "How foolish can you actually be to think that this will work."

"I am doing this for you." Chris said, his eyes filled with determination.

"What? Betraying me?"

"Saving you." Chris stumbled backwards, knowing that he would have to leave before his brother attacks. Thankfully, the elder Halliwell liked to talk a lot.

Wyatt gave out a laugh and said: "Is that so?"

"It is, big brother." Chris smiled and turned his back on his brother.

"You promised to stand by me no matter what." Wyatt muttered, not intending for Chris to hear it, but he did.

"And you promised you'd always protect me," his little brother replied. "Guess we both failed."

Somehow Wyatt couldn't bring himself to attack. He just stood there and watched Chris, not moving a muscle as he heard his brother's words.

Christopher Halliwell left. He stepped into the portal hoping to create a new future. For his family, for himself... but mostly, for his brother. He had to. For Wyatt.
