Да, актерство в этом плане потрясающая профессия. Можно прожить много разных жизней. Правда, и эмционально это съедает изрядно. Имхо, злодеев играть проще, чем добрых или неоднозначных. Так что, думаю. в роли Доктора дума Джулиан изрядно развлекся.

Julian McMahon was the JFK Jr. of Australia. His father was Prime Minister of the country from 1971 to 1972, and the young, wealthy Julian was sent to law school, ostensibly to follow in the footsteps of his father's custom-made shoes. But fate had other plans. Not only did the teenage hunk drop out to become a fashion model, he also turned his back on his past by moving to the U.S. and squelching his Australian accent.

"I was trying to play myself off as an American. I spoke with an American accent all day, every day," he says, rubbing a gray-flecked sideburn as he discusses his carrer, which may soon hit the mother of all mother lodes - being christened as the next James Bond.

We're in a cafe near McMahon's Beachwood Canyon home, and although he showed up in the kind of gnarly Escalade so many successful actors drive, he's not wearing the pajama-like rags favored by off-duty Young Hollywood. In fact, he's looking rather East Coast in an olive J. Lindeberg coat with intentionally frayed edges, a striped red-and-blue shirt and jeans held up by a silver turquoise belt buckle. "I wanted to be an individual and do things on my own. So to be tied to family history was not something I wanted to do."

The 37-year-old no longer hides his australian accent, although it vacillates, depending upon the accent he's using for work at the time. Attentive viewers have heard it slip through the otherwise perfect American parlance of the TV characters that built his career: Detective John Grant on Profiler, demi-demon Cole Turner on Charmed and Dr. Christian Troy on the hip FX hit Nip/Tuck.

It's a career benchmark that McMahon actually gets to employ what's left of his Aussie twang in his biggest movie to date, Fantastic Four. The Fox blockbuster brings the most successful Marvel comic to the big screen this July, and McMahon plays the bad guy, Dr. Victor Von Doom. His exotic intonation adds allure to one of the comic book world's most intriguing, enduring heavies.

"This is the original bad guy," McMahon says of the megalomaniac evil-doer who has wreaked havoc on four-color pulp pages for more than 40 years. "And he wasn't just a bad guy, he was a bad guy for a reason. He was the ultimate survivor." Von Doom is an erudite scientist, entrepreneur and leader of his own obscure country. The Fantastic Four - a family of normal people who suffer an accident in space - would have little use for their new superpowers were it not for this awesome nemesis. Dr. Doom may not be as well known as Spider-Man, but he's as big a personality to comic book geeks. Darth Vader was supposedly modeled on him. And even for a man contemplating Bond-dom, McMahon still considers Von Doom the role of a lifetime.

"You see an evolution of the character. You see the disintegration and rotting of this human being emotionally and physically," says McMahon.

The film promises to blast McMahon from cable-TV fame into household-name status - something his handful of past films has not done.

Despite the time off that cable TV shows typically offer actors, McMahon had little availability until now to pursue better film offers, his "free time" was spent promoting Nip/Tuck on press tours. However, the road show was, in itself, a success. Nip burst out of cable obscurity to win a Golden Globe for Best Television Series-Drama last January, and McMahon earned himself a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series.

Thought McMahon was beaten out by Ian McShane (Deadwood) {the devil incarnate } for the trophy, he has landed in other ways - most notably by getting his name on the getting-shorter-by-the-minute shortlist of James Bond prospects. It's down to McMahon and Clive Owen, and Owen recently told E! that he's not the one. You'd think McMahon would be biting the nails on his surprisingly meaty hands. He's not.

"If you're on the list, you're on the list," he says. "It doesn't mean anything until you get the role. So there's not that much to say." He may not have much to say, but the London tabloids and the Internet seem to be updating Bond junkies by the hour. "He's one of the few classics you grow up with," he says.

If McMahon goies Bond, his career might come full-circle, in that he could certainly draw on his family's wealth and political background for "research." (They even had the fashion down: His father owned more than 100 tailer-made suits, and his mother was the Australian liasion for top fashion designers visiting the country.) And there's a distinct Bond-ness to McMahon's lifestyle, with two starlet ex-wives (Dannii Minogue and Brooke Burns), four cars (a Beemer, a Benz and two Caddys) and a penchant for glamorous nightlife.

"The playboy reputation doesn't bother me," he says of his partying with Hugh Hefner and Joe Francis of the video series Girls Gone Wild. "It's an open persona. There's no limitation." He flashes his fashion-model smile and insists on paying the check. "And that's not a bad thing."
