Questions:

1. What, in your opinion, is the value of Mason/Mary storyline, their relationship? In which way have they enriched one another's lives? It showed the depth of feeling of which Mason was capable. Love is always enriching, even when it ends tragically.

2. Have you ever seen such a union of hearts in your life? If not, do you believe that feelings that deep are possible? Yes. ;-]

3. In your opinion, had Mary stayed alive, would Mason and Mary stay together? Or would they go their separate ways at some point? In soap tradition, it would be on and off for years, otherwise the story stagnates.

4. What are your most and least favourite points of the Mason and Mary storyline? The build-up to the romance, and the death of Mary.

5. If you were writing a script of someone's life, would you include a story of love similar to that of Mason and Mary in it (taking into account the fact that it was very deep and passionate but brief and ended tragically, i.e. would you want someone to experience real love in their lifetime, however short and tragic it might be, even if you know it's not gonna last) and why? Read Cold Mountain, one of my favorite novels, and you'll have the answer. ;-]

6. In your opinion, has Mason ever regained complete peace of heart and mind after Mary's death? If so, with whom and at which point? No, though there were moments with Julia.

7. In your opinion, could Mason ever commit suicide after Mary's death? If not, why? No, because Mason had many flaws, but he was not a coward.

8. Mason was deeply in love with Mary. Have you ever experienced emotions this strong in real life yourself? Were his emotions, as you portrayed them, somewhat stemming out of your personal experiences and being projected by you onto your character? Or was it just brilliant acting based more on what you thought Mason's emotions should look like? Somewhere in between the two...

9. Talking about Mason and Mary's characters, who had more input in creating their personalities - you and Harley or the writers? I.e. did you play your parts just as they were laid out in the script or were some of Mason and Mary's personal traits your and Harley's creative finds? Somewhere in between the two... ;-]

10. It seems that a lot of Mason's bad personal habits have resurfaced after Mary's death. Why did he not try to fight them (in Mary's memory if nothing else, as it seemed that with her Mason felt a strong need to better himself)? Does this mean that they were 'incurable', and even if he were married to Mary, he would have still kept on drinking and/or would have been able to cheat on her with other women? I don't really know. As I've said, he was a flawed character. I like to think that made him more interesting.

11. Do you know what plans the show writers had in relation to the Mason and Mary storyline before they came to the decision to kill Harley Kozak's character off? She was told about Mary's death a week before her contract was due to expire, so the storyline must have been changed quite abruptly. I have no idea.

12. And if you don't know about the writers plans, in your opinion, what Mason and Mary's future would be like (had she stayed alive) taking into account the realities of Daytime TV? Lots of ups and downs, children, probably, along with serious health and fidelity issues.

13. What do you think about the episode in Heaven with Harley's cameo appearance? Would you agree that Mason and Mary's long awaited meeting was portrayed as a little bit distant and cold? Have these scenes played any part in your decision to leave SB? No, I think the writers were just trying to appease the fans who were infuriated by Mary's demise.

14. After leaving SB, have you ever thought of getting involved in other projects with Harley Kozak? Yes.

15. Have you ever thought of going back and playing Mason for another season or two? Yes, but not seriously since about 1990.

16. If you had a chance, would you be interested in directing / playing Mason's part in at least one episode of "Santa Babara - 25 years on" with other members of SB's original cast? Yes, that would be fun. I'll be reunited with Nicolas Coster on the Web series The Bay in the Fall—I'm looking forward to that.

17. Did you find it in any way difficult to play a lawyer? If so, what were the main difficulties? Wouldn't it be easier for you to play Mason as a socialite with no particular job? Maybe easier, but not as much fun. There was a lot of dialogue to learn, though, especially on courtroom days.

18. Do you have your own "special moments", which you treasure, in SB and in your other films/soaps/stage performances? Yes, too many to list.

19. In one of the episodes, right after Mason told Mary that he loved her, Mary found a pearl in an oyster shell. Was she just lucky to find it, a kind of a "miracle", or the whole thing was set up by Mason who had asked Pearl in advance to bring Mary a plate of oysters with the "strategically placed" pearl in one of them? 25 years on our opinions still differ... Mason had nothing to do with it.

20. A few years later Mason, played by Gordon Thomson by then, gave Julia a pearl necklace (which looked very similar to the Mary's one). In your opinion, was it something Mason could really do or was it just a case of writers not knowing Mason/Mary storyline and what a pearl necklace symbolised to Mason and to the viewers? Gordon Thompson is a really good guy, but I think he was playing the Mason Nancy wanted him to play--it was fine, just not my Mason.

21. Have your children watched SB? If so, what do they think about Mason, and about Mason/Mary and Mason/Julia storylines? They haven't watched it. One day, they may tune in to The Mason Chronicles...they were raised by Nancy Bernat, you know. She was primarily responsible for the Chronicle tapes existing. Tracy George is responsible for bringing them to the website.

22. Could you tell us about that tongue-in-cheek suggestion you and Judith McConnell are reported to have made. That Sophia and Mason could’ve had an affair and Ted could’ve been Mason’s son. Do you really feel that Mason could do anything like that? Or were you just taking the Mickey out of reporters? What's the story behind all that? We must admit: it did raise a few eyebrows. I'll never tell... ;o]

23. As far as we know you were against Mason's marrying Julia, because you didn't want the characters to sink into the routine of married life. Which way did you want their storyline to develop without marriage? Would Julia keep on chasing Mason? Would they eventually fall out of love and go their separate ways? Or would one of the characters die? There's a line in the play The Lion in Winter, when Henry II tells Eleanor he hopes they'll never die--”Tusk to tusk throughout eternity”.

24. Is Mason your favourite daytime part? Were you upset that your stint as Cameron in GH was so short and your character got killed off so quickly? There were moments when I was having fun with Cameron, but they were few and far between. It was a frustrating experience all in all. I liked Cameron, but not his storyline—the writers couldn't commit to any one direction.
2. Mason is by far and away my favorite daytime part.

25. Which actress did you find easier and more interesting to work with - Harley Kozak or Nancy Grahn? I'll never tell.

26. Do you keep in touch with some other SB actors? Do you know their birthdays? Do you send them birthday greetings? I touch base with a few people, but don't know any birthdays. I'm terrible about things like that.

27. Where do you live now? Are you single or married? How old are your children and what do they do? Would/did you like them to follow in your footsteps and become actors? I live on a lake in the Appalachian foothills of North Georgia with Thatcher and Nathan and their mother. Holley and I never remarried after the divorce, but enjoy each other's company. ;-]
Thatcher will transfer into the Georgia institute of Technology this Fall, to get his degree in Bio-medical Engineering. Nathan enters West Georgia College, and may well follow in my footsteps, but I'm not pushing him into it.

28. Which character would you like to play either on stage or on TV / the big screen? What sort of parts do you find interesting these days and why? I like complicated character, either good or bad. I'd like to do Richard III, King Lear, and Man of La Mancha one more time. Or two...

29. Have you been to Russia recently? Do you have any plans to visit our country again? What do you like/dislike about present day Russia? What are your fondest memories of this country?
Haven't been in several years, though I have been to Kazakhstan, and will return there in either August or October for filming.

30. Could you tell us about your future acting plans? Would you like to participate in another project in Russia? Perhaps, you've got some offers in the pipeline already? Do you plan to star in some other Radion Nahapetov's movies? Do you keep in touch with him? I just spoke to Natasha, Rodion's wife, while I was answering these questions. Rodion and I are talking about several projects, so I could well return to Mother Russia in the next few months.

31. Is there any chance that one day your could come to Russia with your theatre? Yes, I'd like to bring a production of MacBeth or Man of La Mancha to Russia.

32. Have you ever thought about performing with your theatre at the annual Moscow's Chekhov Festival? No, but I would be open to the idea.

33. As a Vice President of International Federation of Festival Organizations do you have to take part in all festivals organised by the Federation or just in some of them? Do you plan to take part in any of the upcoming festivals? If so, which one/ones? FIDOF as an organization, never recovered from the death of its founder, the beloved Professor Armando Moreno. It has not been active for several years.

34. Which books/films influenced you most? Did any of them have a life changing effect on you?I think I may have read The Little Engine That Could a few too many times...Stanislavsky on the Art of the Stage, by David Magarshack, had a huge influence on me.

35. Are you familiar with Russian literature? If so, who are your favourite writers/poets? Have you ever thought of staging any Chekhov plays in your theatre? I love Chekov, but I doubt if he would sell well at the Tennessee Shakespeare Festival.

36. What do you like to do in your free time? I like to read, fish, garden, watch TV, and work on small engines. Very eclectic.

37. Could you tell us about an ordinary day in your life, what do you normally do? Several of the activities above, unless I'm in production, or fund-raising for my theatre.

38. Right now, answering our questions, are you very focused or relaxed and smiling? Relaxed and smiling.

39. Are there principles in your life which you would never, under no circumstances, forfeit? Do you have any taboos? Yes.

40. Have you ever done anything outrageous, even crazy, in your life? Things which you can't explain logically? Yes. Running with the bulls in Pamplona comes to mid.

41. Even now, so many years on, sometimes at night we still have dreams about SB, do you?
Yes.

42. Your Repertory Company is called The Santa Susana Repertory Company. How did you come up with this name? Was called. It is now dormant, as I can't run a theatre 2000 miles away. I named it after the mountains in the area.

43. Do you plan to work with Chad Brannon on stage again? Yes, but he's a very busy young man at the moment. Wonderful actor. He was a terrific Hamlet.

44. You've got a vast life experience as a man and an actor, and probably you know everything about human nature and relationships. Are there still any secrets left for you in the way human mind works and how it influences our feelings and the way we form our relationships? Yes. Can people and their reactions still surprise you? Yes. Don't you ever feel tired of life and disillusioned in it? No. What do you find interesting in people and in life? Too many things to list.

45. What do the theatre and performing on stage give you? Is it a way to discover some new level in your personal feelings and perceptions; or a way to discover something new in human relationships in general; a certain amount of power over the viewing public; a way to earn money; a combination of above factors; something else? All of the above, combined with a sense of purpose and service.

46. What is the difference between the human relationships in Shakespeare's plays and those in soap operas, as it seems that the problems are still the same: power, money, love, scheming, betrayals, loyalty, friendship...None at all, really. Which is what makes Shakespeare's characters so timeless (if a little more eloquent).

47. Do you believe in God or are you an atheist? And if you do believe, what faith are you? I am a Secular Humanist with Deist overtones.

48. And what do you believe in in general: in love, in fairness, in yourself, in life after death, in miracles, in fate etc, or people don't need to have any sort of faith? I believe more in ethics than in organized religion. I think the Golden Rule is a tenet everyone should live by—In spite of bad translations and tampering by two millennia of clergy, many of Christ's teachings are valid for modern man.

49. Do you believe in reincarnation? If so, who do you think you were in your past life? I used to have a firm belief in reincarnation—now I'm not as sure. I do believe in DNA, cellular memory, and a Universal Mind. If I have lived before, I feel certain I was a Shakespearean...

50. Do you have favourite quotations? And if so, what are they?I have many. One of my favorites: “Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense” Winston Churchill

51. Talking about your life, has meeting someone ever influenced (shocked/astonished/impressed) you so much as to drastically change the course of your life? If so, who are these people and how have they changed your life? I have met people who influenced me, but no one who drastically changed my life course.

52. Did you have moments (days/months/years) when you were trying to figure out what to do with your life, who you were and what your calling was? No, I knew that acting was my calling. I did sometimes doubt the wisdom of that decision, however. ;-]

53. During your SB days you changed the way you look several time. Do you feel more comfortable, from the psychological point of view, with or without beard? How much does your appearance mean to you? I'm more comfortable with the beard at the moment, but that can change at any time. I probably care more about the way I look than I should, but I don't obsess over it.

54. Who do you prefer: blondes or brunettes? Add redheads, and I'll say, “All of the above”...

55. Do you like better cats or dogs? Do you have any pets? We have 3 cats, which I prefer as pets, only because I'm lazy, and they're easy to take care of. I recently lost a wonderful dog, however.

56. Did you like playing Professor Higgins? Did you have any apprehension about this role? I loved playing Higgins, both when I was in high school, and last Fall. I had no real concerns about the role.

57. Would it be possible to transmit us by e-mail a picture of you with an autograph please? Let me try. I usually rely on Tracy for that sort of thing.

58. During your stays in Russia and France you sang several songs. Are these songs registered and will it be possible to purchase the CD? If yes, how could we proceed? I don't believer the songs are available commercially. Singing was always more of a hobby for me, than a profession.

59. You sang des chansons de Jacques Brel. Why do you like this singer ? (I’m asking because he is one of my favourite). What is your favourite song of Jacques Brel? Amsterdam is probably my favorite. I like Brel because of his ability to express emotion with intellectual abandon.

59. Did you work with French producers/actors? Not yet. I'll likely be spending more time in France over the next few years, though.
